What is GKI?
The GKI (glucose-ketone index) determines the ratio of glucose and ketone bodies in the blood. Before we look at this index, we should familiarise ourselves with a few terms.
Glucose
Glucose is a simple sugar that is the body’s main source of energy. The concentration of this sugar in the body is regulated by the pancreatic hormone. After a meal, the blood sugar level rises when the pancreas releases insulin. This sugar is transported into the rest of the body by insulin, causing its concentration to fall. We can measure our blood glucose level from the comfort of our own home if we have a blood glucose meter. A normal fasting glucose level (or glycaemia) should be between 70 and 100 mg/dl.
KETONE
Ketones are chemical compounds that are formed during the digestion of fats. They are an alternative fuel for our body and can be the primary source of energy for humans. Ketone bodies are formed during metabolism There are three types of ketone bodies:
- Acetoacetat (AcAc),
- Beta-Hydroxybutyrat (BHB),
- Aceton.
“Each type of ketone body has a unique role and their levels can be tested. For example, the amount of BHB can be measured by taking blood from the finger, the AcAc content in urine can be determined with test strips and the acetone concentration in the breath can be determined with a special device.”
The Ketogenic Bible by Dr Jacob Wilson, Dr Ryan Lowery.
The normal ketone level in the body should be between 1.5 and 3.0 mmol/litre.
Ketosis
Ketose ist ein Zustand des Körpers, in dem der Körper Energie aus Fett statt aus Zucker und Kohlenhydraten gewinnt. Die Ketose kann in unterschiedlichem Ausmaß auftreten:
- weniger als 0,5 mmol/L – dieser Zustand wird nicht als Ketose angesehen;
- 0,5-1,5 mmol/L – leichte Ernährungsketose;
- 1,5-3 mmol/L – optimale Ketose;
- über 3 mmol/L – sind Sie nicht besser dran als in der optimalen Ketose, während ein solches Ergebnis bedeuten kann, dass Sie Ihren Körper nicht ausreichend mit Nahrung versorgen;
- 8-19 mmol/L – ein sehr gefährliches Ergebnis, das auf einen schlechten Gesundheitszustand hinweisen kann. Die häufigste Ursache ist ein erheblicher Insulinmangel bei Typ-1-Diabetes.
How do you calculate the GKI?
The glucose-ketone index is the ratio of glucose (mmol/l or mg/dl) divided by the ketone level in the blood (mmol/l or mg/dl). This index was developed to evaluate the effectiveness of a ketogenic diet where ketosis is most important. When we know the GKI index, we can determine what state of ketosis we are in, which in turn improves our awareness.
GKI Calculator
- GKI < 1 – You are in very deep therapeutic ketosis.
- GKI 1-3 – You are in deep therapeutic ketosis.
- GKI 3-6 – You are in medium ketosis.
- GKI 6-9 – You are in low ketosis.
- GKI > 9 – You are not in ketosis.
State of ketosis:
- promotes weight loss,
- improves our health in diseases such as diabetes and epilepsy,
- lowers cholesterol levels in the body,
- can improve physical performance.
