Vegan omega-3 with EPA and DHA comes from algal oil: microalgae make these fats, and fish get them mainly from their food. In a trial of 74 adults run by an algal oil producer, algal oil raised blood EPA and DHA as effectively as fish oil. Flaxseed and chia provide ALA, which barely raises DHA. On vegan keto, algal oil is the direct fish-free EPA and DHA option.

What will you learn from the article?
How can vegans get omega-3? Vegans can get omega-3 in two forms: ALA from flaxseed, chia, hemp and walnuts, and ready-made EPA and DHA only from microalgae. [1]
That split matters because ALA is not the same as taking EPA and DHA. ALA conversion is small and differs by sex: young women given 700 mg of labelled ALA converted an estimated 21% to EPA and 9% to DHA over 21 days [2]. In an isotope study of six young men, EPA and DPA were formed, but labelled DHA was not detected [2]. In another study, flaxseed oil providing 3,510 mg of ALA a day left DHA unchanged over 8 weeks in a study of 20 people [13].
So the answer for vegetarian omega-3 is the same as for vegan omega-3. If you do not eat fish, algae are the only direct EPA and DHA source [1].
What should a vegan omega-3 supplement contain? A vegan omega-3 supplement should contain EPA and DHA from algae in amounts you can compare with the GB claim conditions and the UK intake guideline. The key things to check on the label are 250 mg EPA and DHA a day for the heart claim, 250 mg DHA for brain and vision claims, and SACN’s UK guideline of 450 mg long-chain omega-3 a day [16][15].
Freshness is the second check. GOED’s voluntary industry monograph, which is not law, sets maximums of peroxide value 5 meq/kg, p-anisidine value 20 and TOTOX 26 [8]. TOTOX means 2 × peroxide value + p-anisidine value, but TOTOX does not apply to flavoured oils because flavour components distort the test [8]. In 72 omega-3 supplements tested in the USA from 2014 to 2020, including algal oils, 65% of flavoured products exceeded the peroxide limit [10]. Bottled omega-3 oils oxidised faster than capsules in one simulated-use study, so check freshness data rather than format alone [11].
| What to check on the label | Reference value | Unit | What it means |
|---|---|---|---|
| EPA + DHA per daily serving | 250 | mg | condition of the heart claim |
| DHA per daily serving | 250 | mg | condition of the brain and vision claims |
| Long-chain omega-3 per day | 450 | mg | SACN guideline for the UK population |
| Peroxide value | 5 | meq/kg | GOED voluntary maximum |
| TOTOX | 26 | index | GOED voluntary maximum; not applicable to flavoured oils |
| Peroxide value of bottled oils in use (maximum, one study) | 44.6 | meq/kg | liquids oxidised faster than capsules (capsules up to 7.6) |
For vegan keto, BeKeto MEGA Omega 3 Vegan Algae Oil is the most direct choice because a 5 ml teaspoon provides 570 mg DHA and 185 mg EPA from fish-free, vegan, lemon-flavoured Schizochytrium microalgae oil, above both claim thresholds and the 450 mg guideline, in a 150 ml dark glass bottle with 30 servings [16][15]. Its input algal oil has a typical TOTOX below 8 against GOED’s 26, measured before lemon flavouring [16][8].
“EPA and DHA contribute to the normal function of the heart.” The effect is obtained with 250 mg EPA and DHA a day [16]. “DHA contributes to maintenance of normal brain function.” The effect is obtained with 250 mg DHA a day [16].
“This product is intended for adults. Not for use by children or by women who are pregnant or breastfeeding. If you take anticoagulant medication or are due to have surgery, consult your doctor before use.” [16]
Do not exceed the recommended 5 ml serving [16].

Is algae oil better than fish oil? Algae oil is not better than fish oil for blood levels: a 2025 randomised double-blind trial in 74 adults over 6 and 14 weeks showed that algal oil raises blood levels of EPA and DHA as effectively as fish oil. [4]
That study was run by an algal oil producer: five authors were employed by dsm-firmenich, and the sixth was a contracted statistician [4]. The useful comparison is therefore precise, not sweeping. For blood EPA and DHA, algal oil raised levels as effectively as fish oil in that trial [4]. For the omega-3 index, a review of 13 RCTs from 2010 to 2020 found that microalgal oil raised the omega-3 index in every included study, while high-dose flaxseed and echium oil did not [3].
There are still differences between products. Cod liver oil adds vitamins A and D, while fish oil from whole fish and algal oil do not [5]. Algal oil is also the obvious route for vegan omega 3 supplements because it uses microalgae directly [1].
| Attribute | Fish oil | Algal oil |
|---|---|---|
| Who makes EPA and DHA | microalgae; fish take them in with food and make little themselves | microalgae, used directly |
| Effect on blood EPA and DHA | reference | as effective (74 adults, producer-run trial) |
| Effect on the omega-3 index | not assessed in the review | raised in every included study (13 RCTs) |
| Vitamins A and D | no (cod liver oil: yes) | no |
| Suitable for vegans | no | yes |
Did you know? Fillets of salmon fed fish oil contained 2.1 g EPA+DHA per 100 g; those fed rapeseed oil contained 0.9 g per 100 g.
Is there a vegan cod liver oil? There is no vegan cod liver oil: cod liver oil is made from fish liver and contains vitamins A and D as well as EPA and DHA. [5]
That means “vegetarian cod liver oil” is not really cod liver oil, and “gelatine-free cod liver oil” is still fish oil in a non-gelatine capsule. It is not vegan or vegetarian. Algal oil can replace the EPA and DHA part of cod liver oil, but not the vitamins [5]. Algal oil should not be regarded as a vitamin D source. EFSA upper limits for adults are vitamin D 100 µg and vitamin A 3 000 µg RE a day [5].
Need vitamin D as well?
Algal oil replaces the EPA and DHA in cod liver oil, but not its vitamins. Keto vitamins, including vitamin D3 drops, are in the BeKeto shop.
Shop keto vitaminsWhich plant foods contain omega-3? Plant foods that contain omega-3 give ALA: ground flaxseed, chia, hemp seeds and walnuts. [1]
That makes them useful omega-3 foods for vegetarian diets, but it does not make them direct sources of EPA and DHA. EFSA set an adequate ALA intake of 0.5% of energy [9]. The British Nutrition Foundation gives a minimum of at least 0.2% of energy for individuals [15]. These are different types of reference value, not a contradiction.
The practical point is simple: plant-based omega-3 from seeds and nuts is ALA. Seeds and nuts provide ALA; algae are the vegan direct EPA and DHA source [1]. If you want the full food list, start with our guide to omega-3 foods.
Did you know? A review puts ALA conversion in men at about 8% to EPA and below 0.1% to DHA.
Do vegans need an omega-3 supplement? Vegans do not have to take an omega-3 supplement, but without fish or algae their diet has no direct EPA and DHA. [1]
The SACN guideline of 450 mg a day assumes two fish portions a week, and our guide explains how much omega-3 per day that means in practice [15]. In UK Biobank, among 117,108 people, oily fish and fish oil supplements were the strongest positive predictors of the omega-3 index, which had an estimated mean of 5.58% from plasma NMR, not red blood cells [14]. UK Biobank is not representative of the UK population, so that figure should be read as estimated, in UK Biobank [14].
With ALA alone, DHA hardly rises [3]. Algal oil is the vegan way to close that EPA and DHA gap.
Do vegan omega-3-6-9 supplements make sense? Western diets have narrative estimates of about 15:1 to 16.7:1 for omega-6 against omega-3, not a measured UK figure, and EFSA set no ideal ratio. [7]
If you are comparing combined oils with EPA and DHA products, read our guide to omega 3 6 9 before choosing a vegan omega 3 6 9 product.
How do you choose the best omega-3 supplement? Choose the best omega-3 supplement by checking vegan source, EPA and DHA per serving, freshness and keto-friendly format.
For the wider buying guide, including how to read a label beyond vegan or vegetarian omega 3 supplements, see how to choose the best omega-3 supplement.
Is vegan omega-3 safe in pregnancy? Vegan omega-3 suitability in pregnancy depends on the label and advice from your midwife or GP; EFSA adds 100 to 200 mg DHA a day to the adult adequate intake. [9] BeKeto MEGA Omega 3 is not for use by women who are pregnant or breastfeeding [16].
Who should not take algae oil? Algae oil is not for anyone excluded by the product label, often children and pregnant or breastfeeding women. If you take anticoagulants or are due to have surgery, ask your doctor first: omega-3 reduces platelet aggregation, though 11 trials in 120 643 people showed no increase in bleeding, with rate ratio 1.09, not significant [12].
Does algae oil fit a keto diet? Algae oil fits a keto diet as a fat source of EPA and DHA, but no human trials have tested omega-3 supplements in adults on a ketogenic diet. [6] On vegan keto there is no oily fish, so algae are the only direct source [1].
Why is fish oil no longer recommended? Fish oil is not the NHS wording; NHS advice is at least 2 portions of fish a week, including 1 of oily fish. [15] Algal oil is an alternative for people who avoid fish, not something required by new evidence.
Is algae oil safe with a fish allergy? Algae oil contains no fish, so it avoids fish protein, but cross-contact depends on the manufacturing site. People with a fish or seafood allergy should check the allergen statement on the label and ask their GP or allergy specialist.
